University of Hradec Králové
Who We Are
The University of Hradec Králové (UHK) is a modern and vibrant university in the heart of Europe. With 4 different faculties (Faculty of Informatics and Management, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Science, Philosophical Faculty) and XX study programmes, the UHK is home to more than 7,000 students not only from the Czech Republic, but from all over the world. Every day, they meet at the university campus, just a few steps from the historic centre of the beautiful city of Hradec Králové. In addition to lecture halls, seminar and computer classrooms, there is a university library, script shop, art gallery, and also some relaxation zones, canteens, and other places to loosen up.
Apart from education, the UHK is also a scientific institution that offers student research grant and competition opportunities. Thanks to the rich international links with institutions in more than 60 countries of North and South America, Africa, Asia and Europe, university students can gain valuable professional and life experience during their study stays and traineeships abroad.
Moreover, there are plenty of opportunities for students, academics and employees of the UHK to participate in various cultural, sports and other free-time activities. Many of them are organized by the students themselves, and most of them are open to the public. For all these reasons, the UHK is an original and desirable university, and a partner of many domestic and foreign institutions.
What We Do
The spectrum of educational activities at the UHK covers the fields of economics, informatics and management at the Faculty of Informatics and Management, teaching, artistic and linguistic disciplines at the Faculty of Education, natural sciences and engineering fields at the Faculty of Science, social sciences and humanities at the Philosophical Faculty.
Most importantly, the Philosophical Faculty offers a unique programme of African Studies (MA, PhD) that cannot be found at any other university in the Czech Republic. Apart from special focus on African political systems, conflict resolution, theories of development and several other fields, students of the African Studies programme can spend up to 3 semesters abroad studying, doing internships of field research either in Europe or in Sub-Saharan Africa. As a result, the alumni of this programme are valued as professionals and sought-after by various employers ranging from analytical institutions, development organizations, private companies, media, or the civil service.
The Philosophical Faculty is also a publisher of Modern Africa: Politics, History and Society, a reviewed scientific open-access journal abstracted or indexed in the European Reference Index for the Humanities and Social Sciences (ERIH Plus), EBSCO Sociology Source, Google Scholar, DOAJ, International Political Science Abstracts (on selective basis), and in the Scopus database. The journal is published twice a year in English. Its aim is to publish original texts that cover important political, social, and historical issues related to Africa. In particular, the editorial board supports an interdisciplinary approach. Published articles therefore cover a wide range of perspectives from political science through history and sociology to anthropology or environmental and development studies.
